Vestibular/Balance Therapy
Vestibular therapy focuses on the link between the inner ear and the brain, relieving symptoms that affect balance and movement. These symptoms - spinning sensations (vertigo), dizziness, nausea, disorientation or feeling unstable on your feet – can seriously impact your quality of life.
Lutheran Hospital’s vestibular rehabilitation therapists use advanced training to analyze each patient’s unique situation and develop customized plans to treat balance disorders caused by:
- Dizziness/lightheadedness or vertigo
- Numbness/tingling of feet
- History of falls
- Stroke/TIA
- Diabetes
- Headache/migraine
- Vision problems
- Head injury/concussion
- Multiple sclerosis
If you need relief from balance or movement issues, talk with your provider about an order for vestibular therapy. To schedule an appointment, call (260) 435-6143.
About the Therapists
Lutheran Hospital’s vestibular rehabilitation therapists attended the training and completed the vestibular competency exam sponsored by Emory University and the American Physical Therapy Association. This specialized training enables therapists to evaluate patients, develop a care plan and provide therapy to address balance and dizziness issues.
All physical therapists receive basic education about balance and vestibular treatments. However, only a limited number receive advanced competency training and have an in-depth understanding of vestibular disorders and rehabilitation. This specialization and experience differentiates these clinicians from their peers.
To make an informed choice when seeking a physical therapist to treat dizziness or imbalance, ask the following questions:
- Have you taken any advanced coursework in vestibular rehabilitation?
- Do you have educational materials available to help patients understand their disorder?
- How many years of experience do you have treating patients with balance/vestibular disorders?
- How many patients with balance/dizziness problems do you see in a day/week?
