Lutheran Hospital instituted the CPE program in 1985. Since then, the program has expanded to become one of the largest in Indiana, offering full-time, part-time and year-long residency programs. The continuing purpose of the program is to provide in-depth training in pastoral care, to allow participants to clarify their own pastoral identities, and to facilitate the integration of pastoral theology with clinical and parish experience.
At Lutheran Hospital, CPE participants experience a range of opportunities found in a hospital setting by ministering to patients, families and hospital staff.
The primary goals of the CPE program are to promote theological reflection about pastoral conversations and to apply the resultant learning to one's own faith experience. Weekly didactic presentations, verbatim seminars and a variety of group experiences complete the learning process. Participants are able to integrate their learning experiences with their own background and talents to develop a personalized style of ministry.
Lutheran Hospital is fully accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. By completing our program, students will meet some requirements for certification as a chaplain. In some cases, students may also receive college or seminary credit. It is necessary for the student to contact and make appropriate arrangements with the seminary or college for credit.
