Surgical Oncology

Lutheran Cancer Center’s surgical oncology services include surgical oncologists who are fellowship trained in oncology and specialize in the treatment of cancer and malignant diseases in the breast, gynecological and gastrointestinal regions of the body.

Surgical oncologists perform a wide range of surgeries designed to:

  • Obtain tissue samples to confirm diagnosis
  • Identify cancer type
  • Determine the extent of cancer progression
  • Remove malignant and nonmalignant tumors
  • Treat solid tumors
  • Correct problems that cause patients discomfort
  • Assist with device placement, such as IV access

If surgery is an option, surgical oncologists perform techniques that include:

  • Laser surgery
  • Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery
  • Plastic and reconstructive surgery
  • Robotic surgery
  • Video-assisted surgery

The following treatments, in any combination, may also be considered if surgery is not an option or in addition to surgery:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Hormonal therapy
