Is nicotine your enemy? It's a powerful addictive chemical that smokers crave. For smokers, a lack of nicotine creates withdrawal symptoms that are temporary, yet difficult to overcome. The unpleasant side effects of quitting aren't fun, but they are temporary. The more pleasant side effects occur after a few days, as your body repairs itself. You will notice you can taste and smell more clearly, you will breathe easier and you won't cough as much. The best side effect is a longer, more productive life.
A commitment to quit smoking is worth keeping. Here are a few tips to help you succeed:
Drink a lot of water or fruit juice. These liquids will help soothe your dry mouth and throat and reduce the likelihood of irregularity.
Get plenty of rest. Ex-smokers complain of fatigue for a few weeks after quitting. Sleep gives your body the energy it needs to repair itself.
Watch what you eat. Don't replace one bad habit with another: eat low-calorie, low-fat snacks. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and other high-fiber foods, which reduce your chance of irregularity. Keep a supply of sugarless gum, cough drops and sugarless hard candy on hand. These treats will soothe your cough and sore throat.
Practice relaxation techniques. When you quit smoking, you may be tense and emotional. Relieve stress by taking a warm bath or shower, going for a walk or exercising.
Make a list of all the reasons you want to quit. Include reasons such as "I want to see my daughter graduate from college" or "I can buy a new computer with the money I don't spend on cigarettes." Carry the list with you at all times and refer to it in moments of weakness.
