Lutheran Hospital Announces New Leadership

Joe Dorko named CEO
FORT WAYNE, IN (Aug. 21, 2007) — In a unanimous vote, the Lutheran Hospital board of directors named Joe Dorko chief executive officer of Lutheran Hospital.Dorko has served as chief operating officer for Lutheran since 1999.He fills the position vacated by Tom Miller, who is now president of Division V Operations for Community Health Systems, based in Franklin, Tenn.

"Joe already has a strong history at Lutheran during his time as COO. He has been an important part of the success we have experienced as a hospital over the past eight years," said Miller. "Having him lead the team here at Lutheran will allow us to continue to build on our success and further strengthen the culture."

Dorko has more than 25 years of healthcare experience. In addition to being responsible for the daily operations of the facility, he has been instrumental in all of the renovation and construction projects at Lutheran for the past eight years. Some of those projects include the construction of the Lutheran Musculoskeletal Center, the Lutheran Heart Pavilion, the emergency department renovation and the Lutheran Cancer Center (scheduled to open in September).

"It is an honor to be chosen to lead this hospital," said Dorko. "Following in Tom Miller's footsteps is a tall order. But the foundation of our success is at the bedside, where our doctors, nurses, and staff provide remarkable care."

In addition to his work at Lutheran, Dorko has also had an impact in the community through service on numerous boards, co-chairing the United Way of Allen County's "Success by Six" initiative; serving a term as board president for the McMillen Center for Health Education; and volunteering for Habitat for Humanity.

Dorko begins his new duties immediately.

Lutheran Hospital also announced today the addition of two other senior leaders, both with strong ties to the network.

Karen Springer has been selected as chief operating officer. Springer has been the chief executive officer at MountainView Regional Medical Center in Las Cruces, N.M., and has chosen to come back to Fort Wayne. Springer was an original team member at Dupont Hospital, serving as chief operating officer and chief nursing officer in the months leading up to the facility's opening in April 2001. She served in those roles through June 2006. Her first day at Lutheran is Sept. 10.

Steve Miller will become chief financial officer, replacing Steve Carroll who is retiring at the end of August. Miller is currently CFO at Kosciusko Community Hospital and will join the Lutheran team Sept. 4.
