Lutheran to Host Kids’ Marathon Training Session July 18 at Classic City Center
WATERLOO, Ind. (July 9, 2009) — The Lutheran Weight Management Center, in conjunction with Lutheran Children's Hospital, is offering a special fitness activity for kids in DeKalb County that begins Saturday, July 18, from 9 to 10 a.m., at the Classic City Center in Waterloo, 3375 County Road 427.
Families looking to set the pace for physical fitness and outdoor fun are being invited to participate in a special marathon designed just for children.
The 2009 Fort Wayne Kids' Marathon is an incremental running program that is being run as a part of the Second Annual Fort-4-Fitness Festival. This program was designed to encourage kids to exercise and to begin living a healthy lifestyle that will continue for years to come. Participating children in grades K-8 will run a total of 26.2 miles (a full marathon) over a period of 12 weeks. Students will be motivated to build endurance, increase self-confidence and reach goals.
Registration for the Kids' Marathon will be limited to the first 1,000 participants. Visit fort-4-fitness.org/kids-marathon.asp to learn more. The first training opportunity for children in the DeKalb County area will take place July 18 at the Classic City Center. Participants may also register at that time.
Each participant will run/walk a total of 26.2 miles within the designated 12-week period (July 7 — Sept. 25) in increments of one to two miles. Students will run with a training group and/or their parent(s) and will keep a running log to track their progress. Parents, guardians or coaches should assist children with documenting their mileage. Mileage is based on adult supervision and the honor system. Weekly training sessions will be offered at several regional locations including the Classic City Center.
As each child completes his/her 26.2 miles on the Fort-4-Fitness course, he or she will receive a Fort Wayne Kids' Marathon Finisher's Medal and T-shirt. A Kids' Marathon training shirt will also be provided at registration. Initial sign-up is $10 per runner. Weekly training sessions are free. Contact Misti Evans at 260-435-7833 for more information.
