Donors, Recipients and Supporters Join Hands at Lutheran Hospital to Celebrate the Gift of Life

National Donate Life Month Underway to Increase Donation Awareness

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Wednesday, April 16, 2014) – In supporting National Donate Life Month, the  Lutheran Hospital Donor Council, Indiana Organ Procurement Organization and Indiana Lions Eye Bank are hosting a “Linking Hands for Life” ceremony in Lutheran Hospital’s main lobby at 1 p.m., Thursday, April 17. The ceremony will bring together organ, tissue and corneal donors, as well as recipients and staff who support a cause that touches so many lives.

Dozens of supporters are expected to attend and join hands to remind everyone that one person can make a difference for many. Besides the potential of eight organs, one donor can help an additional 50 people through tissue donation. Add to that two corneas to provide the gift of sight, and one donor could easily help 60 or more people in need.

The lives of more than 120,000 people are in the balance waiting for transplantation in the U.S., including nearly 1,500 Hoosiers. About 18 people across the country die each day waiting for an organ transplant.

IOPO and ILEB officials prefer that people register to donate regardless of medical condition or age. One in 10 deceased donors is age 65 or older. Physicians determine at the time of death what organs and tissues qualify for donation.

Lutheran Hospital’s Donor Council is comprised of 25 members and represents 19 hospital departments plus representatives from IOPO and ILEB. The council meets monthly to review processes. Its purpose is to improve awareness, to educate associates and families about the benefits of organ, tissue and corneal donation, and to avoid missing potential donation referrals.

Register to become an organ and tissue donor at DonateLifeIndiana.org or at your local. Be sure to share your decision with loved ones.
