Lutheran Cancer Program Receives Outstanding Achievement Award

Comprehensive community cancer program reaccredited with commendation

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (April 24, 2014) – The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons has granted its Outstanding Achievement Award to the comprehensive community cancer program at Lutheran Hospital as a result of surveys performed during 2013.

Lutheran is one of only 74 cancer programs surveyed in the United States during 2013 to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award. Programs may elect to go through the voluntary accreditation process every three years. Lutheran’s cancer program has maintained its accreditation and the CoC outstanding achievement designation since its first accreditation as a new program in 2007. This was a rare achievement for a program’s inaugural survey.

“Providing care that earns validation from independent, national sources says a great deal about our unwavering commitment to put patients first,” said Brian Bauer, CEO, Lutheran Health Network. “Comprehensive cancer care requires individuals from multiple areas of the hospital working together to meet the unique needs of this patient population. Doing that at the highest level for years on end is no small feat.”

The award is granted to facilities that demonstrate a commendation level of compliance with seven standards that represent five areas of cancer program activity. These include cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, cancer conferences, clinical management and quality improvement. In addition, facilities must receive a compliance rating for the remaining 27 cancer program standards.

The CoC Outstanding Achievement Award applauds cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. An on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor determines the facility’s level of compliance to the seven primary standards.
