Lutheran Hospital Staff Knows Every Drop Counts When Giving the Gift of Life

Administrators and transplant surgeon set to kick off August blood drive

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (July 31, 2012) – With national blood supplies typically lower around the summer holidays, Lutheran Hospital is attempting to get a jump on the Labor Day crunch by holding a monthlong blood drive in August. The kickoff of Lutheran’s efforts will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at the American Red Cross Lutheran Hospital Donor Center.

Leading by example, Lutheran Hospital CEO Brian Bauer, Lutheran Health Network Senior Vice President of Regional Service Development Patti Hays, Lutheran Hospital Director of Environment of Care Tim Davie and Lutheran Hospital Kidney Transplant Program Director Tarik Kizilisik, MD, are scheduled to get the campaign – and sleeves – rolling.

To pump some fun into the initiative, Lutheran staffers have added incentive to give the gift of life. Individual and departmental prizes for those who donate will be awarded via a special drawing at the conclusion of the drive. Prizes include Cedar Point tickets, movie passes, a round of golf with the CEO and use of a suite at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum for an upcoming Komets hockey game.

On average, the permanent American Red Cross donor center at Lutheran collects approximately 230 units of blood each August. Campaign organizers are hoping the internal drive for hospital associates will help increase those numbers substantially in 2012.

Family vacations and other out-of-town activities in the summer tend to reduce the number of regular and first-time blood donors who visit collection sites. But the need for blood is constant, which makes additional efforts leading up to Labor Day weekend especially helpful to maintain the region’s blood supply.

The public can also help by scheduling online at RedCrossBlood.org/make-donation or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS (733-2767) to make an appointment at any collection center.

• Media attending Wednesday’s kickoff are asked to park in the south garage on the Lutheran Hospital campus and proceed to the south lobby where the donor center is located. Photo, video and interview opportunities will be available beginning at 1 p.m.
