IndyCar Driver and Type 1 Diabetic Charlie Kimball to Share His Story at Lutheran Hospital
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Monday, April 30, 2012) – The Lutheran Children’s Hospital Pediatric Diabetes Support Group and Novo Nordisk present “On the Right Track with IndyCar Driver Charlie Kimball,” Thursday, May 3, at 5 p.m. in Lutheran Hospital’s Kachmann Auditorium. The auditorium is located at 7910 W. Jefferson Blvd, in the lower level of Medical Office Building Two on the Lutheran Hospital campus. The general public is invited to attend this free presentation.
IndyCar racer Charlie Kimball, driver of the #83 car for Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing in the IZOD IndyCar Series, will speak about how he has been able to manage his type 1 diabetes and fulfill his racing dream. Charlie is the first licensed driver with diabetes in the history of IndyCar. He will race in the upcoming Indianapolis 500 May 27.
Kimball, who began racing go-carts at the age of 9, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2007 and was forced to temporarily abandon his racing career. After returning to racing the following year, Charlie claimed a podium finish in his first post-diagnosis race. Today, Charlie continues to compete in one of the most competitive racing circuits in the world, proving that living with type 1 diabetes does not restrict him from traveling at speeds of more than 200 mph and doing what he loves to do. Charlie’s message instills in children of all ages that type 1 diabetes, when properly managed, will not stop them either from reaching their dreams.
