Volunteer Central
Volunteers play a vital role in achieving Lutheran Hospital’s mission, providing support to our staff and service to patients and their families. There are numerous benefits available to volunteers, such as discounts in the cafeteria and movie tickets and an invitation to the annual picnic. A volunteer recognition dinner is held each year in the spring to recognize their contributions to the hospital. Each volunteer is required to attend orientation, which outlines the philosophy and the policies and procedures governing staff and volunteers. Service ribbons and pins are earned based on hours of service. Become a valued volunteer and see the difference you can make.
Who volunteers?
People just like you. Students and retirees make up most of the volunteer staff, altogether providing over 8,000 hours of service in our hospitals.
People with many diverse and interesting backgrounds find volunteerism can be a tremendously rewarding experience. Some of the reasons our volunteers have shared include:
- helping others
- adventure
- career exploration
- retired, but wish to remain active
- religious and spiritual convictions
- new to the area and want to meet people
- bored or lonely
What do volunteers do?
We want our volunteers to be comfortable and excited about their role in our hospital. We want to let you use your skills and abilities to the best of your ability. Some of the 'typical' jobs our volunteers perform include:
- staffing information desks
- escorting patients or visitors
- cashiers in one of our gift shops
- delivering flowers and mail to patients
- providing a 'service link' to families in waiting areas, like intensive care and surgery
- assisting nurses by providing fresh water, etc., to patients
- aiding in the discharge process
- supporting some clerical areas
- running errands
- providing courtesy and comfort to families in the emergency area
- and dozens of other necessary tasks
