Heart Transplant Program

Since 1985, the Lutheran Heart Center has served the region with transplant services. To date, more than 200 heart transplants have been performed at the Center ... a clinical experience equaled by only one-third of all heart transplant programs in the country.

Because organ donor shortage has increased the national waiting time for heart transplantation, a waiting patient may develop heart failure. It is very important for those patients to participate with a transplant program such as the Lutheran Heart Center that is familiar with state-of-the-art mechanical ventricular assist devices.

The Lutheran Heart Center was one of the first 20 centers to use the most advanced version of the TCI Heartmate. The Heartmate's unique design may eventually allow waiting transplant patients to stay at home rather than in the hospital. To date, our physicians have employed the Heartmate for periods of up to seven months prior to transplantation.
