Diabetes & Weight Management

Obesity is the number one identifiable diabetes risk that is controllable. Preventing diabetes in children is almost directly related to obesity. So what are we doing wrong? Unfortunately, a lot.

In today's super-size, fast food, junk food, soda pop world, we're taking in far too much fat and sugar. Teenager's soda consumption is completely out of control in the view of the medical community. The body is bombarded with sugar in such volume that the body cannot adjust. Thus begins the diabetes.

What to do? Its simple. Eat better. Don't make the staples of your diet sugar and fat . Make fruits the new sweets, replacing candy and ice cream. Save very rich foods for special occasions, not every day. And replace soda with water, milk and pure juice (in that order).

These are very simple things to say, but very challenging to actually do. The psychological attachment we (as a culture) have with certain foods is very ingrained. Our team of dietitians is well aware of the emotional elements involved with changing food choices.

It's not easy, but it is unquestionably necessary. We are here to assist you in making these positive changes. In partnership with the Lutheran Weight Management Center, we can help you overcome mental hurdles and reach a healthy, manageable weight for life.
