Early Detection is Key...

An advanced system for the early detection of breast cancer is now being utilized by Lutheran Health Network facilities and offices of Fort Wayne OB/GYN Consultants. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in American women, with one out of eight developing the disease at some time in their life. However, when detected early, it is also one of the most treatable forms of cancer. The ImageChecker System allows radiologists a head start in the diagnosis of breast cancer. Clinical studies have shown that this technology is capable of discovering a significant number of additional cancers.

Mammography can detect a cancerous lesion long before a lump can be felt, even by an experienced examiner (please read the guidelines for breast self-exams). However, the detection of breast cancer in a mammogram can be a very difficult task due to the complex nature of breast tissue and the subtle characteristics of the disease. ImageChecker functions like a "spellchecker" for mammograms. The system uses advanced signal processing neural technology to assist the radiologist by identifying areas on the mammogram that contain suspicious features that may warrant a second look.

"We are excited to offer this technology to the women of northeast Indiana," said radiologist Christine Tremper, M.D., Summit Radiology. "Not all abnormalities marked by the ImageChecker will be significant, but for the ones that are, this allows the patient and physician an early jump on the treatment of the disease."

Mammograms performed at Lutheran Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital, Dupont Hospital, Anthony Medical Center and offices of Fort Wayne OB/GYN Consultants will be reviewed by ImageChecker Systems located at Medical Imaging, 7900 West Jefferson Blvd., and Lake Imaging, 2520 Lake Ave.

The earlier breast cancer is detected, the better the chances of successful treatment. Smaller and more localized cancers have a better chance of being cured. According to the American Cancer Society, if the breast cancer is at a local stage (confined to the breast), the five-year survival rate is 96.8%. If the cancer has spread regionally, however, the survival rate is 75.9%. For persons with distant metastases, the survival rate drops to 20.6%.

Several breast cancer treatment methods are available depending on the medical situation and woman’s preference. These include a variety of surgical options, radiation therapy, chemotherapy or hormone manipulation.
