Lutheran Hospital's Emergency Services department is unique in Fort Wayne in its commitment to the special needs of children. Emergency Services has designated a section exclusively for children. A pediatric trauma team is in place and a state-of-the-art pediatric critical care and resuscitation room is always available.
Away from the busy, potentially frightening areas of the department, a special three-bed ward is designed, furnished and decorated to meet the needs of children. A separate area in the waiting room for families with children contains a playhouse as well as many games and toys to keep children occupied.
The medical staff in Emergency Services is supported by pediatric specialists from Lutheran Children's Hospital. Children are not just small adults. Their bodies react differently to, not only illness and injury but also to treatment. Our pediatric intensivists have spent their entire careers learning the subtleties and unique qualities of pediatric medicine. And at no time is the difference more crucial than when it's an emergency.
